Madonna evokes her French origins on French TV

Madonna appeared on the French TV show « La chanson n°1 » on June 8, 2003.
Interviewed by television talk show host Daniela Lumbroso, Madonna confirmed her French origins and that she is a direct descendant of Julien Fortin.

Daniela Lumbroso. Alors Madonna, vous avez quand meme une relation tres particuliere avec la France ? Vous avez habite un peu en France à vos debuts d'ailleurs. Vous parlez un peu français ?
[So Madonna, you have a very special relationship with France ? You lived in France for a while when you started. You speak a little French?

Madonna. Un peu.
[A little bit]

DL. Un peu? Tres bien meme oui
[A little bit? Very well yes]

Madonna. Mais ma fille parle français tres bien.
[But my daughter speaks French very well.]

DL. Elle parle français parce qu'elle va au lycee français ? Comment ça se fait que vous avez eu envie de la mettre dans un lycee français ?
[She speaks French because she goes to a French high school? How is it that you wanted her to study in a French high school?]

Madonna. Because there is one in Los Angeles, one in New-York and one in London.
[Parce qu'il y a une ecole française à Los Angeles, à New-York et à Londres.]

DL. Et elle peut aller dans les trois.
[And she can study in the three schools.]

Madonna. So I can travel and do my work and she goes to school. C'est parfait.
[Donc je peux voyager, travailler et elle peut aller à l'ecole. C'est parfait.]

DL. Vous meme d'ailleurs…
[And by the way, you…]

Madonna. I have French blood in me ! (…)
[J'ai un peu de sang français ! (…)]

DL. On ne le sait pas beaucoup. Ce qu'on sait, c'est que vous avez un pere italien mais votre mere etait issue d'une famille d'origine française. Je sais que les Fortin, Julien Fortin, votre ancetre, avaient quitte le Havre en 1640 pour aller s'installer au nord des Etats-Unis.
[It is not well known. What is known is that you have an Italian father but your mother is from a French family. I know that the Fortins, Julien Fortin, your ancestor, left le Havre in 1640 to settle in the North of the United States.]

Madonna. You've done your homework! Very good. I am very impressed. You've done your homework!
[Vous avez fait vos devoirs. Tres bien. Je suis tres impressionnee. Vous avez fait vos devoirs.]

DL. C'est la moindre des choses. Donc les Fortin sont partis du Havre. Si vous nous regardez au Havre et que vous vous appelez Fortin, vous etes peut-etre un cousin eloigne de Madonna. Ils sont partis du Havre et ils sont alles donc aux Etats-Unis et je crois qu'il y a un trait de caractere des Fortin qui est cette espece de volonte d'y arriver. Je crois que, dans la famille, vous appelez meme ça la "fortintude". C'est-à-dire, vraiment la volonte quoi.
[It's the least that I can do. So, the Fortins left le Havre. If you are watching from le Havre and your name is Fortin, you may be a distant cousin of Madonna. They left le Havre and they settled in the United States. And I know that there is a character trait specific to the Fortins which is this willingness to success that you call in your family the "Forti(n)tude". Which means the willingness.]

Madonna. Fortitude, yeah. Tuff. Thanks God. Otherwise, I would not have survived twenty years in that industry.
[Fortitude, oui, la fortitude. On est des durs. Dieu merci. Sinon, je n'aurais pas survecu vingt ans dans ce metier.]

Daniela Lumbroso did her homework but not properly because most of the information related to Julien Fortin mentioned in this interview are false.

Julien Fortin is the ancestor of Madonna but he was christened on February 9, 1621 in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Vair (Sarthe, France) and not in le Havre. In 1650, he sailed from the port of Dieppe with several companions and arrived three months later in Quebec and not from le Havre in 1640 as mentioned in the interview.

Julien Fortin did not settle in the North of the United States but in Saint-Joachim in Quebec.
